Cleaning Dirt 

Vacuuming or sweeping with a soft broom helps clear loose dust and grit from the surface before mopping vinyl. Make sure your vacuum is suitable for cleaning vinyl surfaces as vinyl is prone to scratches, and using a vacuum with the wrong attachment can damage the floor finish.

Getting Rid of Persistent Dirt

Dirt and grime ground into Vinyl floors demands more attention and can be mopped up using a suitable cleaning product and technique. While you can opt for an off-the-shelf cleaning product recommended by your the vinyl manufacturer, homemade cleaners can also prove simple and equally effective. A cup of Vinegar mixed with 4 liters of warm water makes a great disinfectant cleaner for vinyl floors.

A mixture of a mild shampoo or liquid soap with warm water is also an effective cleanser, but wiping off excess soap with plain water is a must to clear the layer of scum which usually is left on the surface.

Stain Removal

You can use acetone-free nail polish removers or rubbing alcohol to clear persistent ink or makeup stains from vinyl floors. A paste of baking soda and water when applied to stains caused by food spills is sufficient to clean up the spot.

If you are looking to cover up scuffs and scratches on the surface of the floor, rubbing in a few drops jojoba oil or baby oil will prove effective.

Cleaning Waxed And Non-Waxed Vinyl Floors

Vinyl flooring in older homes usually have a wax coating and you’ll have to be extra careful to ensure that wax is not rubbed off while cleaning. Using a mix of mild detergent and warm water will help ensure that just dirt is removed from the surface.

Modern apartments usually sport no-wax vinyl floors. Take care to shop for and use cleaning products marked explicitly for no-wax vinyl floors to preserve the look and sheen of the vinyl.

Vinyl surfaces are sensitive to scratches, and you’ll have to use soft bristled brushes, brooms or cloth, suitable vacuum cleaners and non-abrasive cleaning products suited to the floor type to preserve the flooring.
