In this feature Neha Agarwal describes her friend Nithya Chandramouli's home, a zen-like space with a dull gold theme flowing through the interiors.
The moment you step into Nithya Chandramouli's home after probably hours of juggling through the city's narrow roads and heavy traffic, you feel the serenity and the positive vibes of the place instantly putting you at peace. Such is the calming effect of her lovely abode!
Home for the last eight years to a lovely 3-member family - Nithya, her husband Chandramouli, and their son Kapil, this place can aptly be described as a heaven in monochromes of gold, beige and brown! (Though Nithya insists that this theme wasn't intentional). Nithya, an interior designer, prefers handpicking statement pieces for her home. The entry foyer sports this beautiful buffet cabinet (carved out of Sheesham wood), a huge Jharokha screen, a ceramic vase and a wooden reclining Buddha - all in shades of brown and beige. Don't we all love Buddhas?

The family moved to India from the U.S about eight years ago and thus, has few pieces of furniture from there. Featured here - A hardwood TV entertainment unit reminiscent of colonial style furniture. An interesting feature of this unit is that the cabinet doors can swing both ways as they are held together by 'butterfly hinges'. Nithya chose it for its old-world charm.
The couch is a 3-piece sectional sea-grass sofa from Pottery Barn. The seats and the raw silk cushions have been custom made in a dull gold to blend with the overall color scheme in the living room.
A nod to renewable resources and ethical design sensibilities, the sea grass sofa is also extremely durable, and has rich undertones of brown and beige.
This lovely cylindrical shaped cabinet is sourced from a local home decor store. It is placed at one end of the sofa and serves as an end table as well as a storage unit in the living room. An embossed brass sheet runs all along the cabinet length.

The lady of the house conjures up magical dishes in this beautiful kitchen, which has been completely done up in wood veneer.
Not the one for the run of the mill stuff, Nithya chose textured granite (as opposed to the more common black) that runs along the kitchen counter top as well as the splash-back. The brown and black grains of the granite complement the brown veneer cabinets beautifully. All this and the fact that she keeps her kitchen spotless makes this place a visual treat.
This wall outside the kitchen is the perfect space to relive old memories with a host of family pictures telling stories of their own. The console table, carved out of sheesham wood, fits elegantly into this area.

The dining area has an extremely sturdy Sheesham wood dining table with four chairs and a bench, giving a formal yet rustic feel to the place with an accent wall highlighting the setting with a strategically placed bamboo plant in the corner.
The dining table has natural, deep indentations giving it a rich feel. However, the highlight of this place has to be the dull gold wallpaper that probably drives the gold-beige-brown theme in this home.
This wallpaper with Damask-shaped motifs has a timeless elegance to it and was interestingly, Nithya's husband's choice!

Call it a stroke of brilliance or sheer imagination, we love this piece of framed brocade with paisley motifs in the foyer leading to the guest bedroom! One piece of artwork does the trick and doesn't even overwhelm the space.
The guest bedroom sports similar undertones as the rest of the house with a colonial style bed, night stand and bamboo blinds.
Nithya lets her creativity do the talking here - she has used the damask-motif wallpaper as the headboard. Quite innovative! The veneer wardrobes have ample storage space.

Kapil's preference was taken into account while designing interiors for his room. Blue and pastel green are predominant shades in this room making it a perfect choice for a young boy.Storage options are aplenty in this room with veneer wardrobes on both sides and a single bed with an inbuilt storage box underneath it.
Nithya has veered away from the gold and beige theme in the master bedroom and chosen soft taupe in way of the curtains and furnishings.
The sheesham wood bed is flanked by 5-feet high ebony shaded night stands on either side, complementing the high headboard well - masculine, yet soft.
The veneered study table near the bedroom door is long enough for 2 people to work simultaneously.
Walk in closet
The walk-in closet in the master bedroom has a long vanity mirror on one side and dark brown veneered wardrobes with ample storage on the other.
