A textured paint finish, as the name implies, is a paint finish that has an actual texture that can be felt and seen visually. Textured paint finishes are most commonly used on the exterior walls of homes and buildings but it is also currently in vogue to use textured paint finishes on interior accent walls. A textured paint finish is used to provide a pleasing aesthetic look and adds visual interest to your walls in comparison to a simple coat of flat paint.
There is an endless variety of textured paint finishes that you can choose from, from simple textured finishes that can be created with the use of a roller to heavier finishes that are applied using a trowel, textured paint finishes can be created using a plethora of methods.
A textured finish is usually created in 3 steps, namely, application of primer, application of base texture to provide the desired design or texture, and finally the top coat. To begin with, as with any other wall to be painted or finished, it is important to make sure that the surface is clean and free of dust, dirt, loose paint, mildew etc. The wall is then sanded and primed to seal the surface and create a smooth base for the texture coat to adhere to easily.
In the second step the texture is applied, this could vary from a simple roll on texture that is created with different rollers to a heavier, more labor intensive, hand applied texture. The textured pattern that you choose will determine the costs, materials, labor, and quantity of top coat required at the end.
Once the textured base is dry and set, the topcoat is applied to enhance the durability of the textured paint finish, giving it added protection from the elements. Some top coats even have water repellant, anti mildew and dirt shedding properties to enhance the longevity of the textured paint finish.
