Considering that we spend one-third of our lives on our mattresses, the importance of cleaning them regularly goes without saying. So, we decided to give you some DIY techniques and hacks to efficiently clean your mattresses to last a lifetime.

1. Essential Oils :

There are quite a few essential oils that are known to promote sleep. Lavender and chamomile are well-known aromatherapy aids. Mix two cups of baking soda and about 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Sprinkle the mixture evenly onto the mattress and let it be for a couple of hours. After 2 hours, vacuum the mattress thoroughly and you’ll get a mattress smelling better-than-new.

2. Remove Yellow Stains :

People sweat during their sleep. We don’t really notice it until yellow stains form on your mattresses. These stains look terrible and most of us just cover it up with clean sheets. Well, we say not anymore. Mix 250 ml of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid. Spray the solution over the stained area and you can see the mattress brighten almost instantly.

Moms with small children know that mattresses become a bit soaked occasionally. Use the same solution mentioned above and add a few drops of essential oil. Once you blot as much urine as possible with paper towels, spray the stained area with your solution and allow it to dry. Vacuum any excess baking soda residue.

3. Get Rid of the Smells  :

Vinegar is the perfect way to reduce mattress odors. Simply spray the mattress with white vinegar let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes before blotting the majority of the moisture up with paper towels. Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress to absorb odors and the remaining moisture. Vacuum the baking soda after a couple of hours.

4. Steam Cleaning your Mattresses

Steam cleaning uses heat to disinfect your mattress, lift stains, and eliminate any pesky odors all without any chemicals, making them the most effective as well as eco-friendly. Vacuum the bed first to get rid of any dust or debris before going over the entire mattress using short bursts of steam. Make multiple passes on stained areas and blot up any excess moisture. Let the bed dry for 4-6 hours before using it again.

5. Linens and Pillows :

Your linens should be washed regularly. This includes washing your quilts, blankets, comforters, and duvet covers. Use hot water to deep clean and sanitize the sheets and pillowcases. Pillows should be washed at least once every 3 months. You can use your washing machine to quickly clean your pillows. Use hot water to deep clean and sanitize them. Dry them on low heat to get fluffy pillows.
