5 Simple Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites: Soothing the Itch
POV: You enjoy the evening breeze with your limbs exposed on your stroll. You suddenly feel a prick on your arm. In a flash, you reflexively swat (in slow motion) at the source of the prick. You feel a soft and wet sensation, you look at your hand, it has your blood. On your arm are the squashed remnants of the attacker, you wipe them away.
Ideally, that would be “The End,” but unfortunately, there’s more.
Within a few moments, your arm starts to itch, and there’s a slight red bump at the place you got pricked. You scratch the itch to relieve it. But that only makes it more itchy, and the redness increases. You lift your hand to scratch it again…
STOP!! Stop scratching the itch, it might give you relief but that’s just temporary, you will only be making it worse if you keep scratching. Here is what you can try instead-
Ice x Press
Get an ice pack, if you don’t have one then wrap some ice cubes inside a piece of cloth and press it gently on the affected area, continue doing it every few minutes. Ice not only reduces the inflammation caused by the mosquito bite, but it also provides a numbing effect thereby putting a stop to your itch.
Hello Honey!
Honey naturally has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. This makes it perfect to combat mosquito bites. Apply a small amount of honey to the affected part and leave it for a while before wiping or washing it off. This will provide some relief from itching and reduce inflammation.
Aloe Vera
They make for a nice garden plant, it would be a gross underestimation to think that is all they are good for. Aloe Vera is widely regarded for its soothing effect, it is also used to treat burns and rashes. Applying the Aloe vera gel on the affected area can help alleviate itching and reduce inflammation.
Baking Soda
Ever wondered why so many cleaning hacks have baking soda in them? It is seemingly used more for other purposes than for baking. Anyways, you can make a paste out of baking soda by mixing equal parts baking soda and water. Apply this paste to the affected area and let it dry for ten minutes before washing it off. This should reduce itching and inflammation according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).
Soap and Water
Sometimes you just need to wash. Use Soap and water to wash the affected area, in most cases, this alone will solve the problem. If it does not, it’s not all for nothing as the soap can help reduce chances of infection. You can then try the other remedies listed above.
It might sound ridiculous to treat mosquito bites, your body might be able to take it but there are people out there with sensitive skin and weak constitutions, for them, it is not a light matter.
