Built to last, your refrigerator is an appliance that is always running and used on a regular basis. But, sometimes, you may make some simple mistakes and compromise its efficiency and cause it to leak. And when a refrigerator leaks water, it needs to be addressed immediately. It is very important to know the reason why your refrigerator is leaking water in the first place.

This article includes the most common causes of your refrigerator leaking water and how you can fix it.

1. Check Door Gaskets

If you have a faulty seal, warm air gets in, and cool air goes out which results in the rise of the interior temperature. That means your refrigerator will have to work overtime to keep things cool which would result in the build-up of condensation around the cooling coils and subsequent dripping. Over time, this will become a large puddle that you notice.

To fix this problem, begin by checking the rubber door gaskets on your refrigerator. If and when you notice a faulty seal, rub the gaskets with hot water to remove any buildup. Pro tip: a petroleum jelly applied to the gasket can create a seal. You might need professional help from an experienced technician to replace your gasket if the problem persists.

2. Inspect The Defrost Drain

The defrost drain in your refrigerator moves the condensation out of it into the drain pan. But over time, ice and debris could clog the drain and subsequently result in backups and a wet kitchen floor. Remember that your refrigerator’s defrost drain will be located differently depending on its model.

You can check out the user’s manual to locate the defrost drain and in most cases simply flushing the drain with warm water will clear the blockage. In case the line is clogged with debris, use a baking soda-water mixture (1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 cups of water) to slacken any buildup.

3. Check The Drain Pan

To prevent the pooling of water inside the food storage area, the water is drained into a pan in the refrigerator. The pan could crack due to reasons such as age, vigorous use, and regular moving. Follow the drain line to the drain pan by removing the refrigerator’s kick plate and examine it thoroughly.

Pull the refrigerator away from the wall to find the drain line. Check if the drain pan has any holes or cracks. If you notice any kind of damage, order a new drain pan from your manufacturer.

4. Call Professional Help
